Why Backpackers Shouldn’t Skip Singapore

Why Backpackers Shouldn’t Skip Singapore

Singapore is not a typical stop on a backpacker’s trip to southeast Asia. While it doesn’t rival the same low costs as destinations like Thailand or Vietnam, this modern city still has plenty to offer budget travelers. Here are 7 reasons why backpackers shouldn’t skip Singapore:

1. Supertrees Grove
This breathtaking sight in Gardens by the Bay is Singapore’s most iconic feature, and admission to the garden is free. You can wander beneath the Supertrees and watch the “Garden Rhapsody” light show that happens every night, or pay 8 SGD to access the OCBC Skyway. From there you’ll see stunning views of the Supertrees Grove, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Flyer, and more.

2. Gardens Galore
Gardens by the Bay isn’t the only beautiful greenspace in Singapore. Take the metro to the Singapore Botanical Gardens, and pay 5 SGD to explore the dreamy National Orchid Gardens. Then visit Mount Faber Park for great views of the city, and watch the sunset from the Henderson Waves bridge that connects it to Telok Blangah Hill Park.

3. Chinatown
Chinatown is a picturesque heritage district where you’ll find cheap food, souvenirs, and accomodations. For just a few SGD you can enjoy traditional hawker dishes, or brunch at the cute Loft Cafe. When the sun goes down and the red and gold lanterns light up the streets, sit outside and enjoy a Tiger beer before returning to your nearby boutique hostel (try: 5footway.inn Project Ann Siang).

4. Year-Round Festivals
We happened to visit during the annual i Light Marina Bay festival, a free event running from March 3rd to 26th. With artistic light displays, food pop ups like Pasarbella, and the Gastrobeats carnival area, there’s inexpensive fun to be had. Search the city’s events calendar to see which festival you might be able to plan into your trip, like the Singapore Food Festival in July or the Mid-Autumn Festival.

5. The Skybridge
We stumbled across The Pinnacle@Duxton while exploring the city, and were curious to know if we could access the building’s skybridge on the 50th floor. It turns out you can for only 6 SGD! Once up, you’ll find the longest sky garden in the world where you can hang out and take in the best panoramic view of Singapore.

6. Ladies Night
Being on a budget in Singapore doesn’t mean you can’t go out for a glamourous night on the town. On Wednesdays many of the city’s coolest bars and restaurants offer ladies deals like free entry or complimentary cocktails. Check out this list of ladies night deals in Singapore to find the best hotspots.

7. Marina Bay
You don’t have to be staying in a pricey hotel at Marina Bay to enjoy it. Take pictures by the water at sunset and watch the free “Wonder Full” nightly light show after. You could also catch a free performance at Esplanade Theatres on the Bay or pose with Merlion Park‘s famous statue.

With unique architecture, inexpensive attractions, an excellent metro system, and the ease of communicating with the locals in English, this city should be high on every budget traveler’s bucket list.
